How to play Tangram

Read the aim of Tangram, then make your first move. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

Make the controls familiar

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Start with a deliberate move.

Step by step

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Controls

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

A useful example

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
