How to play Word Deduction

Choose a round of Word Deduction and settle into its rules. Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Look at what changes after your first action. Make your first input carefully and watch the result. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Guess a five-letter answer from the included collection. Entries must contain five letters; accepted guesses are not checked against a complete dictionary.

Read before acting

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Step by step

  1. Enter five letters.
  2. Green marks the correct position; gold marks an available copy elsewhere.
  3. Grey means no matching unused copy.
  4. Use the feedback to solve.

Controls

Type a guess and press Check guess or Enter. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

With APPLE as the answer and ALLEE as the guess, the first A and final E are in the right places. The extra L and E are not both counted as present. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Watch out for this

Repeated letters do not imply unlimited copies in the answer. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
